Today I want to share the way I usually choose a range of colors for my illustrations. When I was at art school, we did a bunch of exercises about the colour wheel and colour theory. For anyone who doesn't know about the principles of color, this is the colour wheel:

Hoy quiero compartir un poco de la manera en que suelo escoger las gamas de color de mis ilustraciones. Cuando iba a la escuela de arte hicimos muchos ejercicios sobre el círculo cromático que para quien no conozca nada sobre la teoría del color, es algo más o menos así. 

Here you can see some basics of colour theory. There's primary colors, are CMY (cyan, magenta, yellow), you can use those pigments in real life to build the rest of the colours of the wheel. There's also secondary colors and also tertiary. I recommend you to study the basics of color to understand this wheel and how is build.

Aquí puedes ver un poco de la teoría básica del color. Los colores primarios son Cyan, Magenta y Amarillo (CMY) además del negro, estos colores son primarios porque no pueden obtenerse mezclando otros colores, pero los colores secundarios si son obtenidos mezclando los primarios (siempre hablando de colores pigmento, y no de colores luz). Si no conocéis este tipo de cosas os recomiendo echar un vistazo a la base de la formación de color para entender cómo se forman y como conseguirlos.

I usually start my coloring process thinking about the type of illustration. For children's illustration I like the pastel tones, but I use also intense tones to create a mix. I love a determinate range of colours (warm colors) but sometimes I use also cool colors, although in a pastel way.

Suelo empezar el proceso de color pensando en el tipo de ilustración que voy a hacer. Para ilustraciones infantiles me gusta utilizar tonos pastel, pero también uso colores intensos para crear una combinación que contraste. Me gustan los colores cálidos pero a veces también utilizo colores fríos, aunque en tonalidades pastel.

I start thinking about a main color, and adding some colors keeping in mind the colour wheel. Here's an example. I know this is not the best way to create a colour palette but is the way I've been using forever.

Empiezo pensando en un color dominante, y voy añadiendo a partir de ahí algunos colores teniendo en cuenta los principios del círculo cromático. Sé que no es la mejor manera de crear un rango de colores pero es la que he usado siempre. Recordad investigar el proceso de otros artistas!
If you can't decide for a range of colors, you can use some interesting tools to create a colour palette like Adobe color, Colormind.io or Coolors.co. These websites help you to generate some interesting color palettes to use on design and sometimes illustration.

Si no puedes decidirte por una paleta de colores, hay algunas webs muy interesantes que pueden asistirte en ese proceso, tales como Adobe color, Colormind.io o Coolors.co. Estas webs generan patrones de color y paletas que puedes usar por ejemplo en diseño gráfico o en ilustración.

Here's an example of the same illustration colored using different colour schemes, first of all, an sketch:

Éste es un pequeño ejemplo de colorear la misma ilustración utilizando combinaciones distintas. Antes de nada, un boceto:
I've colored the first version using the primary colors (pastel + intense way) and some extra colours to create a visually richer version.

He coloreado esta primera versión utilizando como base los colores primarios (algo variados), tanto en una forma pastel como en una forma más intensa, y he añadido algunos colores extra para enriquecer visualmente la composición.
For the second version I've chosen complementary colors and some intense colors to create a contrast.

Para la segunda versión, he utilizado el principio de los colores complementarios, añadiendo además algunos colores extra para contrastar.
For this third version I've used two complementary colours adding multiple intensity versions to create a kind of duotone composition.

Para la tercera versión he usado dos colores complementarios ligeramente variados en diferentes versiones de intensidad y brillo para crear una composición de estilo duotono.

Bonus: I've tried to combine the three different versions using the 'multiply' layer mode on Photoshop and some interesting things happened, take a look:

As you can see, there's more than a correct way to colour an illustration. Take your time to explore and test the best combinations for your art and play with primary, secondary and tertiary colours... Let's enjoy!

Today, l'll re-upload a post I did some time ago in another blog, where I explain how to do a pattern starting from a watercolor drawing. In this time some people asked me about the process so here it is again. Hope that you like it!

Hoy, re-subo una entrada que hice hace ya algún tiempo en otro blog, donde explicaba cómo hacer un patrón a partir de una acuarela. En este tiempo, algunas personas me han preguntado sobre el proceso así que aquí está de nuevo. Espero que os guste!
The first thing you need to do is scann the watercolor to clean it. It's important to have a great scanner and scan it at 300dpi or higher.

El primer paso es escanear la acuarela, es importante que tengáis un buen escaner si queréis que la imagen conserve una buena calidad. La resolución ideal es de 300ppp para que mantenga la misma calidad que la acuarela original.


The next step is clean the watercolor to remove the texture of paper, you can use the Curves of Photoshop, it's more easy to use this than Levels, but you can use both.

El siguiente paso es retocar la acuarela para eliminar la textura del papel (en el caso de que el papel tenga textura). Os recomiendo las curvas de Photoshop, para mí es más eficaz que los Niveles.



The next step is to draw a square with the guides of photoshop (you doesn't need to draw with lines), it's useful to add the middle guides too.

El siguiente paso es el de dibujar con las guías de Photoshop una forma, podéis usar un cuadrado o un rectángulo, y os recomiendo que marquéis con las propias guías la mitad horizontal y la mitad vertical.


Now we can put the bigger elements on this square, we will put the small elements later.

A continuación colocamos en ese cuadrado marcado con las guías los elementos grandes que tengamos de nuestra acuarela y dejamos los pequeños para añadirlos más adelante.


This is the key of entire process: you need to select one of horizontal half and pull to the other side. In this case we pull the left horizontal half and we move to the right.

Ahora viene la parte importante: debemos seleccionar una mitad, en este caso horizontal izquierda y trasladarla al otro lado (al lado derecho).


We need to do the same with the vertical half, move one to the other side (vertically).

Y a continuación haremos lo mismo con la mitad vertical (trasladándola al otro lado), en este caso la mitad vertical inferior se traslada a la mitad vertical superior.


If we done this two steps right, our new base will fit perfectly on the original square that we drew few steps ago.

Si lo hemos hecho bien al mover el cuadro a la posición inicial debería encajar de nuevo perfectamente, tal como vemos en esta imagen.


Now we can put the smallest elements on our new base, filling the pattern.

Ahora sí podemos colocar los elementos pequeños en los huecos que han quedado sin salirnos del cuadro imaginario marcado con las guías, el resultado será nuestro motivo principal.


And done! Only we need to repeat this pattern to make an awesome and bigger pattern, yay!

Ya sólo necesitamos repetir el motivo principal y unir las repeticiones unas con otras para tener nuestro estampado hecho, ¡Yuhu!

Today, I would like to show you one of the art supplies that I want to experiment with soon.

Neocolor II is a watersoluble wax oil pastel from Caran d'Ache. The first time I used them was in the school when I studied Illustration. Since then, I completely forgot about their existence, but this year, after to decide my main objective of grow as an artist, I wanted to re-discover them.

Hoy, quería enseñaros mínimamente un material con el que quiero experimentar muchísimo más en un futuro cercano.

Neocolor II es un pastel acuarelable tipo cera de la marca Caran d'Ache. La primera vez que los utilicé fue en la escuela de arte cuando estudiaba Ilustración. Desde entonces, me olvidé completamente de ellos. Pero este año, con el objetivo en mente de crecer como autora, quería redescubirlos.


For this tiny test I've used the 'Smooth - Heavyweight' paper from Daler Rowney, a super nice brand who have truly great watercolor papers. In this case, is a 25 pages bloc, 220g paper with a light texture. Is a great paper for colored pencils and pastels, but be careful using watercolors and techniques that requires water.

Para esta pequeña prueba he utilizado el papel "Smooth-heavyweight" de Daler Rowney, una marca cuyos papeles son realmente interesantes y que tienen una variedad estupenda en cuanto a posibilidades para acuarela. En este caso, es un bloc de 25 hojas de 220gr con un grano muy muy suave, casi ni se nota. Es muy agradecido con técnicas secas como los lápices de color o los pasteles, pero ojo al usar técnicas que requieran agua.


You can use Neocolor II as a regular wax oil pastel, but in this case, you can also add water for a watercolor effect.

Puedes usar los Neocolor II como una cera cualquiera, pero en este caso, además puedes añadir agua para encontrar un efecto tipo acuarela.



In the next picture, you can see the color effect when you mix two colors. Like colored pencils, you can use many of them to reach the desired color.

En la siguiente foto, puedes ver el efecto que crea el solapar dos colores. Al igual que en el caso de los lápices de colores, puedes utilizar un puñado de ellos para llegar al color que buscas.


If you want to use them with water, consider to try it on a separated paper, because the color after adding water is a little bit different than before adding it.

Si quieres usarlos con agua, te recomiendo que pruebes primero en un papel separado, porque el color cambia ligeramente en su tonalidad respecto al color sin el agua.


Like an example of use, I drew a little planet using multiple colors to reach a dreamy effect on the drawing.

Then, I've added water to create different textures on the drawing. Let's try Neocolor II and just have fun experimenting!

Conocí a Lilu hace unos años, cuando acababa de llegar a su nuevo hogar.

Era la perrita más negra del mundo y con el super poder de hacerse un rosquito pequeño en el sofá, casi tan pequeño como para pasar desapercibida, para hacer creer que no existía.
Pero Lilu llegó a la vida de Marina para todo lo contrario, para existir y convertir su día a día en algo especial.

Poco sabemos de la vida que Lilu tenía antes de tener madre, padre y hermanos gatunos, pero si sabemos que ahora disfruta de todo el amor que se merece. Por eso, y por muchas otras cosas, empezar junto a Marina el proyecto Lilu no quiere estar sola ha sido siempre algo importante.

Los años que hemos pasado por un lado Marina escribiendo, y por otro yo dibujando, ha ido transformándose continuamente, pasando de una idea a otra, creciendo a veces más rápido y a veces más lento, siendo una pequeña constante en nuestra vida y en nuestra amistad, para acabar naciendo como un pequeño tebeo titulado Lilu ya no está sola y publicado por Mr.Momo en el que Marina ha volcado su amor por Lilu y yo he volcado mi amor por ellas.

I met Lilu a few years ago, when she had just arrived at her new home.
She was the blackest dog in the world and with the super power to become a small doughnut on the sofa, almost so small as to go unnoticed, to make believe she didn't exist.
But Lilu came to Marina's life for the opposite, to exist and make her day to day something special.
We don't know so much about the life that Lilu had before having a mother, father and cat brothers, but we do know that now she enjoys all the love she deserves. For that reason, and for many other things, to begin with Marina the project Lilu no quiere estar sola has always been something important.
The years that we have spent writing (Marina), and drawing (me), has been continuously transformed, passing from one idea to another, growing sometimes faster and sometimes slower, being a small constant in our lives and in our friendship, to end up being born as a little comic entitled Lilu ya no está sola and published by Mr.Momo (only in spanish) in which Marina has poured her love for Lilu and I have poured my love for them.

Son 46 páginas que resumen de una manera tremendamente condensada lo que supone darle una casa a un animal que tiene la capacidad de convertirla, mágicamente, en un hogar.

Tal como resume perfectamente Marina, que es en realidad la experta en letras:

"(...) Todos conocemos el tópico del salvador salvado, y todos sabemos de su veracidad. Yo le di a Lilu una casa y ella la convirtió en un hogar. Siempre es así, siempre que les dejas, siempre que quieres y te dejas querer. Por eso este libro es una colección de momentos llenos de felicidad que mi familia multiespecie vive en su día a día, y también es un alegato a favor de la adopción de perros y gatos, cachorros y adultos. No es solo que les des la oportunidad a ellos, es que te la des a ti de hacer de tu vida algo infinitamente mejor."

They are 46 pages that summarize in a tremendously condensed way what it means to give a house to an animal that has the capacity to turn it, magically, into a home.
As Marina perfectly sums up, she is actually the expert using words:
"(...) We all know the topic of the savior saved, and we all know its veracity. I gave Lilu a house and she turned it into a home. It's always like that, whenever you leave them, whenever you want and let yourself be loved. That's why this book is a collection of moments full of happiness that my multi-species family lives in its day to day, and is also a plea for the adoption of dogs and cats, puppies and adults. It's not just that you give them the opportunity, it's that you give it to yourself to make your life infinitely better."







No tengo la suerte de estar cerca de Lilu a menudo, pero el tiempo que paso con ella y su familia cada vez que puedo estar ahí, me hace darme cuenta de lo mucho que se quieren y de lo valiosa que es esa colección de momentos, y me hace sentirme muy agradecida por haberlos plasmado en líneas y colores.

Si alguna vez los habéis vivido esos momentos, sabemos que podréis sentiros identificados con Lilu, y con su historia.

I'm not lucky enough to be around Lilu often, but the time I spend with her and her family every time I can be there makes me realize how much they love each other and how valuable that collection of moments is, and makes me feel very grateful for having captured them in lines and colors.
